Here you can find out about us, the greenway, which stretches from the heart East Belfast to Comber, and the threat to it and what you can do to help. The Greenway which is a traffic free linear park which stretches from inner East Belfast to Comber is growing in popularity with walkers and cyclists. The government plans to replace it with a “bus way” for Rapid Transit buses. Their plans will destroy the Greenway. We plan to convince them to run their buses on the Upper Newtownards Road instead, leaving
the Greenway to be enjoyed as a community amenity for future generations.
The
Greenway Campaign is supported by people of All Ages: Caroline Bloomfield (former Chair of the campaign) with Jim Allan
(top right) who is in his eighties and still cycles on the Greenway every day. Jim
was a founder member of the Greenway to Stay campaign.
Oisin Doran, aged 8 (left), meets Dawn Purvis PUP MLA
for East Belfast to thank her for her support for the Greenway.
The Election is Coming!!!!
Election time presents us with an opportunity when politicians actually listen to ordinary people. If any call at your door please ask for their views on saving the Greenway and make sure to let them know you regard this as an election issue
Campaign Group Puts the case for Saving the Greenway Directly to the Minster
A delegation from the Greenway to Stay Campaign met Regional Development Minister Conor Murphy at
Stormont on 21st September.
The delegation presented the Minister with a copy of our petition of 1378 signatures including those collected on this website. A big THANK YOU to everyone for their support. It looks like it will be next year before a final decision is made and we are continuing to collect signatures so if you haven’t signed yet it is not to late.
The Minister, who had been on the Greenway, understood why we wanted to save it. He promised that the issues raised would be considered and said that his Department is now seriously considering the Upper Newtownards Road as an alternative.
